March 29, 2010

If April showers bring May flowers, then March rains just bring a lot of MUD!!! We seem to have a lot of water for living in the desert. The good news is...we will have enough water to irrigate when the dust arrives. The reservoirs are filling rapidly and water is being turned out to keep flood levels in compliance.

As for the expansion progress -- tomorrow is the day for the barn. They will be starting tomorrow to install the works for the 6th stall. They hope to be able to complete the task in one long day.

And when it rains, it POURS!
The vacuum pump was making a strange noise over the weekend. Had the repair crews out yesterday, cleaned a couple of things, installed a new card of some sort, made some adjustments and everything worked well until 4:00 am this morning. So am milking started about 9:30, noon milking didn't happen and pm milking is under way now.

We have had 35 babies this month!! There are only a couple left to calve that could increase the count. Our herd count is at 255 with 215 going through the barn.

The dry pen has been moo-ved to the feed lot. We still have a close-up pen. The dry pen, when cleaned out will transform into "string 5" until the new barn is complete. We should have the preliminaries done soon so we can get a starting date for ground breaking.
Employee news is that maybe by weeks end, everyone may be here.

I will be leaving Friday with Grandma Bev to Texas for her Christmas present to the Rangers vs. Mariners game.

More tomorrow, when the barn is done!

March 10, 2011

I have started "MOOS FROM THE FARM" to keep everyone up-to-date on the progress of expanding the herd.

We had 2 heifers calf today bring our herd count to 246 with 206 going through the barn. We had our first angus calf this week. he is pretty cute. For those who do not know...we bred some of the holstein/jersey heifers to Jeremy and Anna-Marie's angus bull, Lazy A. (named by Jason)

Since we started milking 3x on Jan. 18 our production has increased while our somatic cell has decreased.

We are still waiting to see plans for adding the 6th stall to the barn. No fabricator seems to be in a  a hurry to get us the details.

We are starting to get a little feed back on bulk tanks or silos.
